Below are some Microsoft Teams questions we asked, with the best answers we have so far.

What if I have a question that isn't answered here?

If nothing here helps, feel free to Contact our Support Team.

Where can I find the invite email? What does it look like?

If it’s your first time joining our MS Teams space, you will receive an email that looks something like this (check your Spam folder):

From: Microsoft Invitations on behalf of Memphis Technology Foundation <invites@microsoft.com>
Subject: Will contain “invited you to access applications within their organization”
Body: Will contain a link that reads “Accept Invitation”

The “on behalf of Memphis Technology Foundation” is us – allowing us to use their MS Teams space is just one of the many ways that MTF helps GiveCamp Memphis!

Clicking the “Accept Invitation” link will get you connected to our space (see questions below for help).

Where is the Microsoft Teams space I'm trying to connect to?

Clicking on the following link should take you into our GiveCamp Memphis 2022 space. If you have difficulty, see the rest of this page for help, or Contact our Support Team for help.

GiveCamp Memphis 2022 Microsoft Teams

You should see several channels and our GiveCamp Memphis logo. Here’s a screenshot of roughly what it will look like when you arrive:

Why is there (Guest) at the end of my name?

We are all guests of Memphis Technology Foundation (MTF), who hosts our Microsoft Teams instance. The “(Guest)” designation at the end of our names is Microsoft’s doing. It is beyond our control, and we cannot remove it.

Can I connect to two organizations' MS Teams at the same time?

Short answer: Sign into MS Teams using the email address we invited (the email address you registered with).

Long answer: Yes (one account; two orgs) and no (two accounts; two orgs).

  • Yes: Microsoft Teams will let you switch between the spaces your account belongs to. At the top right of your MS Teams software, click on your profile pic to see what spaces your account has access to. Here’s what it might look like:

  • No: Microsoft does not (yet) let you sign two different accounts into Microsoft Teams at the same time. If you have multiple MS Teams accounts, you’ll have to make sure you’re signed into MS Teams with the same account we invited.
Can I change my avatar?

Sadly, no.

Can I change my name?

You are not yourself able to change the name that is displayed for you in our Microsoft Teams instance.

GiveCamp Memphis organizers can change your display name in Microsoft Teams, but — and this next bit is true — it can take hours and sometimes days for Microsoft Teams to start displaying your changed name to everyone else, and GiveCamp Memphis organizers cannot shorten or precisely predict that delay.

If you nevertheless want us to tell Microsoft Teams a new name for you, we want to help: include your Microsoft Teams email address and preferred First and Last Name in a new Support ticket.

What email address (or "Sign-in address") should I use?

When you registered to be a GiveCamp Memphis volunteer, you provided a contact email address. We sent a Microsoft Teams email invitation to that email address. Sign into Microsoft Teams with the email address which received our invitation.

"Sign in to all apps"? "Manage my device"? What?!

During sign-in, when you give your Microsoft username and password, Microsoft Teams might ask you about “all apps”, or maybe about letting an organization “manage your device”.

"All Apps" Dialog

You may decline both offers. If you accept them, it’s no big deal, but… if you see an option to “sign in to this app only”, that works fine.

Why does a different Team appear when I click your MS Teams invite?

If the device you used to click our MS Teams email invitation link is already signed into Microsoft Teams, you might find that clicking on our link takes you right into the Team you’re already signed into, instead of into ours. If that happens, we have two options:

  1. Sign out of your other account in the Microsoft Teams software that appeared, and then again click on our email invitation link.
  2. Tell us what account you’re already using in Microsoft Teams, and we’ll be happy to invite that account to our Team, instead.
Why is it wanting me to choose between a "Work or school" or "personal" account?

You might see a dialog similar to the following:

Microsoft Account Type Dialog

If the email address you are using was given to you by your employer, your school, or the IT department of some other organization you belong to, choose “Work or school account”.

If the email address is one that you created for yourself, choose “Personal account”.

Why does it say I "don't have access to the 'givecampmemphis.org' org in Teams"?

You might see a message like the following when you try to login.

This means you have signed in to Microsoft Teams using an account that does not have access to our specific GiveCamp Memphis instance. You have not logged in with the account that you will be using for our GiveCamp Memphis weekend together. Double-check that you are logging in with the account which received our Microsoft Teams invitation.

Why does it tell me to "Ask your admin to get you started with Teams"?

If you see a prompt like the following:

This means you have logged in successfully, but your Microsoft Teams client has connected to an organization which is not providing you access to Microsoft Teams. If you signed in using the email address which received our invitation, you might see in your Microsoft Teams software a dropdown menu which lets you choose GiveCamp Memphis without changing accounts. Otherwise, login with the account which received our Microsoft Teams invitation.

Why does it say I'm "missing out"?

If you successfully sign into an account that belongs to an organization that isn’t yet using Microsoft Teams, you might see a prompt like the following:

If you signed in using the email address which received our invitation, you might see in your Microsoft Teams software a dropdown menu which lets you choose GiveCamp Memphis without changing accounts. Otherwise, login with the account which received our Microsoft Teams invitation.

Why does it say that "Microsoft Teams is disabled"?

If you log into an account that belongs to an organization that has disabled Microsoft Teams, you might see a dialog like the following:

If you signed in using the email address which received our invitation, you might see in your Microsoft Teams software a dropdown menu which lets you choose GiveCamp Memphis without changing accounts. Otherwise, login with the account which received our Microsoft Teams invitation.

Why does it say "does not exist in tenant"?

If you log in as an account that we have not invited, you might see a dialog like the following:

Login with the account which received our Microsoft Teams invitation.

Why does it say "You'll need permissions to access this team or channel"?

If MS Teams looks like this when you try to join our space, Contact our Support Team, let us know what you’re seeing, and we’ll get it fixed for you.
